Carta Nautica 1111.PDFIn 1734, when John Davis was commissioned by the British East India Company to lead an expedition in search of a southern continent, he created a set of charts called Carta Marina for navigating his ship during the voyage. Sailors pieced together these pieced together this early map from scraps of other charts and handwritten notes. Davis's Carta Marina became a crucial reference for early voyages into the Southern Seas and for coastal navigation in general. The third edition was published in 1754 in London with extensive annotations by Davis himself in order to assist both maritime traders and explorers navigating the unknown southern oceans. The charts remained in use during the eighteenth century and provided valuable information for James Cook and other explorers who would later reach the southern extremities of the globe.A finely engraved and detailed sea chart covering all of New England, Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, Bermuda, Bahamas, parts of Florida and Cuba.

Carta Marina 1539 - English EditionAs the first European to navigate the Arctic Ocean around 1519 -1522 AD, Hernán Cortés was also among the first to discover that it was not an endless ocean but instead an inland sea or “Gulf” as he called it. Hernán Cortés also discovered the northern coast of South America and the Mexican coast of Guatemala and Yucatán.In 1544, during his second voyage, he charted the northern coasts of South America and reached as far as “La Guayra” (Carolina). In 1545, he sailed along the coast of Honduras reaching as far south as “Belize”. He explored many islands including Cuba and Hispaniola. In 1519, he visited Haiti where he spent some time and visited some locations that were later explored by Christopher Columbus in his voyage to the New World. In 1520, he sailed along the northern coast of South America towards northwest in search of land in search of “the strait which goes to the East Indies”. In 1533, when he returned to Cuba with his brother after spending some time in Hispaniola, he was captured by the indigenous people and later executed for plotting against them. The first edition of this atlas was published in London by William Faden and sold even before the disappearance of Christopher Columbus’s journal published by his son Ferdinand. The atlas is divided into six volumes, based on Davis's chart division method “Espejo” (mirror). (The first edition is included in the above list of references.) In 1567, a second edition was published with a revised text and a revised set of maps. The map of Spain was also updated. In 1588, a third edition was published with a further updated text and reissued as “Spanish America In A New Map In Town And Country”. This atlas covers as far as “Bermuda” as well as parts of the East Indies and North American coasts from California to Florida. This atlas is also included in the above reference list.
